Keeping Cochrane Safe

Cochrane is a safe and welcoming town. Crime and drug-related issues are currently very minor, and most residents enjoy peace of mind in their neighbourhoods. However, as our community grows, it is important to act proactively. Across Canada, communities that experience rapid growth often see an increase in crime, addiction, and homelessness. Taking steps now allows Cochrane to prevent these challenges from escalating.

Compassion for those in need

Being a safe community does not mean ignoring the struggles of vulnerable residents. Addiction and homelessness are complex issues, and people caught in these cycles deserve support rather than judgment. Residents who are homeless and willing to follow social housing rules should have access to stable housing. People battling addiction should be provided with effective treatment and rehabilitation programs.

Supporting vulnerable residents not only helps individuals regain stability but also strengthens the entire community. When people have a path to recovery, they can rebuild their lives and contribute positively to Cochrane. Compassion is not a weakness; it is a foundation for a resilient community.

Accountability for those who break the law

At the same time, Cochrane cannot tolerate criminal behaviour. Addiction can sometimes lead to crime, and open drug markets, street violence, or theft threaten the safety of everyone. Residents who break the law and endanger the public must face firm consequences. I will advocate for council to request that the Crown pursue maximum sentences for serious offences, ensuring that Cochrane remains a town where law-abiding residents feel safe.

Strengthening resources for public safety

Cochrane has grown rapidly, and our current resources need to keep pace. While the RCMP does excellent work, there are not enough officers to fully address challenges if they arise. I will push for a dedicated police presence in Cochrane. This ensures that criminal activity is closely monitored and deterred while residents continue to feel safe in streets, parks, and public spaces at any hour.

A balanced, preemptive approach

This strategy is about balance. It combines compassion for residents who need support with strict accountability for those who threaten community safety. Addiction treatment and social housing programs provide stability and hope, while strong law enforcement protects families, seniors, and businesses. Acting now is a preemptive measure to maintain the safety and quality of life that makes Cochrane special.

Building a community we can be proud of

By taking proactive steps, Cochrane can remain safe, welcoming, and resilient. Vulnerable residents will have access to help, troublemakers will face clear consequences, and everyone can feel secure. This approach strengthens property values, encourages families to settle here, and ensures that our community continues to thrive while staying ahead of challenges seen in other parts of Canada.
